For the first time, Gartner has dropped the generic theme for their flagship event, indicating a departure from their one size fits all approach of the past. Instead, the familiar track system will provide the needed structure. This year, they will support the following pre-designed tracks:
- Mastering Leadership
- Create a Dynamic Organization
- Transform the Technology Core
- Architect the Digital Platform
- Drive Business Performance
- Plan for the Digital Future
It is also worth noting that Gartner’s experiment with “Industry Sunday” has clearly been a success. This year’s agenda is packed with a wide variety of sessions across banking, insurance, manufacturing, education, government, retail, utilities, oil & gas, and healthcare. Industry Sunday also brings with it a focus on leading in a world that is constantly being disrupted and leveraging innovation to make an impact on your industry. Some notable sessions include “The End of Education and the Future of Learning”, “How Banks Can Win in a Platform World”, and “Disruptive Digital Manufacturing Innovation Stories from the Front Lines”.
Over the past few years, Gartner has shifted their messaging to reflect the changing dynamics of the IT world. Just a short decade ago, IT was an easily overlooked part of the business – everyone knew they were there but no one knew exactly what they did or why. This is no longer the case. IT is not only visible and capable of creating significant business impact, but they are the business. The increasing pace of digitization means that every business is an IT-driven business. No longer can IT be the shy kid on the edge of the dance floor. CIOs and other Senior IT Executives are responsible for making the decisions that influence the ultimate success or failure of their organizations. Gartner has recognized and even heralded that shift – and the tracks reflect that call to action. Notable sessions include “The 2018 CIO Agenda: Powerful Practices to Help You Master the New Job of CIO”, “Industrializing Bimodal — The Key Principles and Practices for Digital Success”, and “The CIO’s Guide to Working With Startups — Accelerating Innovation by Leveraging Your Ecosystem”.
