What to Expect When Expecting Digital Twins

What to Expect When Expecting Digital Twins

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – 29 March 2019 -- Gartner Inc., a leading industry analyst firm has listed digital transformation vendor Mavim in a short list of vendors that provide software that enables the creation of a DTO.  A DTO is a digital twin of the organization. A digital twin of the organization helps EA and technology innovation leaders prioritize, guide, plan, monitor, analyze and scale complex initiatives.

In a research note entitled “What to Expect When You’re Expecting Digital Twins,” a number of Gartner analysts lay out the taxonomy of Digital Twins as they are proliferating in the market.  Gartner defines Digital Twins as “a design pattern for a new class of enterprise software component that produces a digital proxy for a thing, person or process”.  Digital Twins can be used for a variety of business goals but what they share in common is that they provide users with situational awareness about how the business is changing and responding to its environment.

In the document, Gartner also defines three types of digital twin: composite, discrete, and Digital Twin of an Organization.  The discrete digital twin is created in order to optimize a single asset, people or other physical resources. A composite digital twin involves the combination of multiple discrete twins.  For example, IoT sensors can be used to provide insight into individual pieces of equipment in a manufacturing line.  Each piece of equipment has its own digital twin, but the composite digital twin is created by combining the data from the discrete pieces of equipment to create an understanding about how the entire manufacturing line is operating.

The final type of Digital Twin is the Digital Twin of an Organization, which is intended to help maximize value across specific commercial processes or the entire business operations.  It is in this final category that Mavim was named as a representative vendor alongside three other vendors.

Jean-Jacques Vossen, Mavim’s CEO had the following to say about the recent inclusion in the research note, “Mavim is proud to be shortlisted as DTO vendor. We’ve had large customers leveraging Mavim as a DTO for years, but it is great that Gartner has confirmed that this is where the market is headed. Digital business leaders are beginning to understand the impact that a tool like Mavim can have for complex organizations.”
